The centerpiece of this necklace is a strikingly beautiful seal made of yellow jade. It is from the time of the ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). It is in wonderful condition. The setting and bail are modern 14 kt gold.
This seal has a soothing quality to the touch, and has a pleasing heft. This is not a lightweight necklace.
Seals have been in use in many different cultures, from Neolithic times to the present day. They were used to convey identity, mark ownership and protect property, in the same way that signature often does today. They were also status symbols.
