Ancient Near Eastern Bronze Cylinder Seal

$235.00

The centerpiece of this necklace is a bronze cylinder seal from the ancient Near East. Cylinder seals have been in use from at least 3,200 BC. They were used to identify ownership in much the same way that a signature does today. Rolling the seal on wet clay leaves the impression which conveys the identity of the seal's owner. So this seal was the personal property, and symbolic identity, of an individual person who lived a very long time ago. It's amazing that you can hold it in your hand in the present day.

Most cylinder seals were carved from various types of stone. There are rare instances of seals cast in bronze such as this one.

The images on this seal are somewhat difficult to make out owing to the erosion of it's surface and/or the craftsmanship of the person who cast it. There are two figures that probably represent Near Eastern deities. Also two quadrupeds can be discerned. One of the figures appears to be pointing to a cluster of seven dots which in all likelihood represent the cluster of stars known as the Pleaides. This is represented on other Near Eastern seals I have seen dating from the early 1st millennium BC.

Strung with modern light green aventurine, red tiger eye and brass beads. The clasp is PermaGold, a highly durable 24 kt gold plate with a lifetime guarantee against tarnishing.
